Bernedoodles

What is a Bernedoodle?

THE BERNEDOODLE is a designer breed, the result of breeding a calm, mild tempered, Bernese Mountain Dog, to an intelligent, and non-shedding male Poodle.

The Bernedoodle does great with kids and other pets, making it a great choice if you're looking for a family pet. Started in 2003 by Canadian Breeder, Sherry Rupke, this breed was purposely bred to make an ideal pet and companion. The Bernedoodle is a very sociable dog and needs lots of human interaction.

The Bernedoodle is rapidly gaining popularity among dog lovers due to beautiful looks, great temperament, and intelligence. It's low shedding coat has also been appreciated by dog lovers, especially those who struggle with allergies from pet dander.

Bernedoodles can vary in size, depending on whether the stud is a standard, mini, or toy Poodle. We are currently breeding for mini Bernedoodles. A full grown Mini Bernedoodle is usually 18-22 inches tall, weighing between 25 - 49 LBS.

Because the Bernedoodle doesn't shed much, they need to be brushed regularly to prevent matting. It is also recommended to have their coats clipped every other month or so to keep them as healthy and clean as possible. The coat of a Bernedoodle does vary some. Most Bernedoodles come with a wavy coat that sheds minimally if at all. It is rare, but there are a few that come with a straight coat. Usually the curlier the coat, the less they shed. However, the curlier coats are harder to maintain.

The Bernedoodle Parents

THE BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG is a beautiful tricolor dog. They are loyal, social, and intelligent. They were first bred in the central region of Bern, Switzerland where they got their name from.

Sometimes nicknamed the "gentle giant", the Bernese Mountain Dogs were first bred as working dogs used for herding around the farm. They were also used to pull carts loaded with bread and dairy products to different farms across the Swiss Alps. They were not only favored as great working dogs, but also as faithful watchdogs and loyal companions.

Even though their is no longer a need for cart-pulling dogs. The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America still holds competitions to give these dogs an opportunity to show off their strength.

The Bernese are very dedicated to their families with a special fondness for children. They are so loyal that re-homing an adult Berner and breaking it's original bond can be difficult. They are also known to lean on people to seek all possible attention.

THE POODLE is a breed know for its intelligence, with its intelligence level ranked at second place to all breeds, the border collie being the first.

Some of the qualities of a poodle are it's non-shedding hair instead of the typical fur coat. It has a longer life span of approx. 12 - 15 years. The Poodle is also very trainable and excels in obedience.

The Poodle hails from Germany where they were called "pudel" which is German for puddle. The dogs are excellent swimmers, and were often a duck hunter's companion in retrieving his game. The Poodle became so popular in France that they named it their official dog. This is where the common misconception comes that Poodles have French origins.

Poodles are very people-friendly and do best in a well-socialized environment. Poodles do not enjoy being alone or being bored. They are highly active and enjoy plenty of exercise.

The Poodle is the only dog that comes in 3 sizes; standard, miniature, and toy.

  • The standard is the largest form of the breed and stands at least 15 inches at the shoulder with most being between 20-23 inches. They usually weigh between 45 - 80 lbs.
  • The miniature Poodle is the more mid-sized Poodle and is usually 14-18 inches tall, weighing between 25-49 lbs.
  •  The Toy Poodle stands up to 10 inches tall, and weighs about six to nine pounds.

Currently Peaceful Valley Puppies is breeding for Miniature Bernedoodles and therefore only using a miniature Poodle stud.

The Bernedoodle Advantage

  • A low-to-non shedding dog that is great for those who deal with allergies.
  • A great blend of both the intelligence of the Poodle and the family-oriented loyalty of the Bernese.
  • A longer life span than the Bernese.
  • Due to hybrid vigor, a Bernedoodle usually has less health issues than each of it's purebred parents.
